SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A 2-year-old boy was shot in the upper right leg while sitting in the front seat of mother's car in Spring Lake on Monday night.

Authorities said the child was airlifted to UNC Hospital and was stable after surgery on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, deputies with the Harnett County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) determined the shooting to be the result of an accidental discharge by the child. The boy was sitting in the front passenger seat at the time of the shooting.

The child's mother, Davanika McLean, was sitting in the driver's seat in a residential area on Crest Circle talking to someone outside of the car, according to officials.

Investigators recovered a semi-automatic handgun from the scene. The handgun was stored in the unlocked glovebox of the vehicle by the child's father, according to HCSO.

They did not say whether the gun belonged to McLean or if the child gained access to it.

The boy was still hospitalized at UNC as of Wednesday.

Harnett County investigators were still reviewing all the evidence on Tuesday morning and at this time, no charges have been filed.
