2 Treated After UNC Lab Explosion

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Two University of North Carolina students were briefly hospitalized Tuesday after a small explosion in a science laboratory as they were  disposing of chemical containers, university officials said.

The explosion happened in the Morehead Laboratories building at 115 South Road shortly before 4 p.m., UNC spokeswoman Lisa Katz said.

The students, who were not identified, apparently were disposing of containers that had residue from other chemicals on them, Katz said. University environmental health and safety officials said the chemicals apparently came in contact during the disposal process, leading to the explosion.

One student had a cut over one eye and the other had no visible injuries, officials said. They were treated at UNC Hospitals and released.

South Street was closed for about two hours during the incident.
