SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A small, 2-passenger plane crashed on Friday afternoon in Johnston County.

Both passengers were injured in the crash and taken to the hospital. While the passengers were alert and awake following the crash, the extent of their injures are unknown.

Several investigators and first responders were on the scene of the crash near Johnston Regional Airport in Smithfield.

Video from the scene shows that the plane landed on the cockpit. The tail of the plane also flew off during the crash, video shows.

According to records from the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft was owned by Blue Line Aviation LLC, a flight school in Morrisville.

A spokesperson couldn't confirm whether or not a student was in the cockpit at the time.

"We do not know the extent of the injuries at this time, and we do ask for your prayers, and that you respect the privacy of those involved at this difficult time," said Ashley Tucker with Blue Line Aviation.

Friday night the Johnston County Sheriff's Office was guarding the crash site, making sure it's not disturbed before the FAA can begin its investigation.
