2 men killed in Durham on Thursday, no suspects arrested

The Durham Police Department is investigating a late Thursday night shooting that killed a man along Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway.

DURHAM, N.C. — Two men were killed in shootings in Durham on Thursday and so far, the Durham Police Department has not announced the arrest of any suspects.

On Thursday afternoon, Wahid Downey, 18, was shot at the 1400 block of Wabash Street, across from McDougald Terrace. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died from injuries, police said.

Burton Elementary School and R. N. Harris Elementary School were on a delayed dismissal because of the gunfire.

Hours later, at around 11 p.m., Marcus Ortega-Burch, 20, of Durham, was shot and killed along Kent Lake Drive at the Lakemoor Apartments. That apartment complex is about 3 miles away from where the first man was shot.

By the time first responders arrived to the scene of the shooting, the man had already died, according to the police.

Both of the shootings "[do] not appear to be random," according to the Durham Police Department.

Video shows that there was what appears to be at least one bullet hole in the front window of the car on the driver's side.

Durham police did not mention that the man who was killed was shot while driving. They also did not say whether or not the two shootings were related.
