2 men charged in August murder of Raleigh basketball star

Two men have been charged with the murder of an 18-year-old Sanderson High School graduate who died in August, Raleigh police said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Two men have been charged with the murder of an 18-year-old Sanderson High School graduate who died in August, Raleigh police said.

Elijah Ugochukwu Umelo, 18, and Roland Lacure, 44, were charged with the murder of Desmond Myles Jenkins.

Lacure was arrested Tuesday, and Umelo was arrested early Wednesday, according to court records.

Jenkins was found with a gunshot wound in the 9400 block of Prince George Lane, off Old Lead Mine Road, around 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 10.

He died shortly after being taken to the hospital, police said.

Jenkins was going to attend Vance-Granville Community College and play basketball there.
