CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Two people died Saturday night and 10 others were injured when a Chevy van headed northbound on Interstate 95 crashed.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the van was carrying 14 people and was headed north to the New York-New Jersey area from Florida when the driver ran off the road and hit a tree around 9:30 p.m. Troopers believe the driver may have nodded off.

Video from the crash scene showed suitcases and other personal belongings on the ground.

Ten people were taken to hospitals including Harnett Central, WakeMed and UNC. A trooper told WRAL News at least some of the victims were in critical condition.

Troopers said it did not appear that weather, alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, although the roads were wet.

Late Sunday, troopers released the names of the dead.

Rafael D. Perez, 44, from Yonkers, and Luis A. Aldarondo, 33, from the Bronx, died in the crash.

Driver Elain Garcia, 46, also of the Bronx, was listed in critical condition at WakeMed. According to troopers, she was the only person in the van wearing a seatbelt.
