2 Charged With Ripping Copper Wire From Business

Two Wayne County people have been charged with stealing more than $200,000 in copper wire from an area business, authorities said Friday.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Two Wayne County people have been charged with stealing more than $200,000 in copper wire from an area business, authorities said Friday.

Donald Scott Balkcum, 32, of 1765 Mitchell Loop Road in Roseboro, and Kimberly Jernigan Lessard, 28, of 659 Sharecake Road in Clinton, are each charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods.

Deputies responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the Rosewood community found a vehicle loaded with copper wire, authorities said. An investigation determined that a business had been burglarized and its electrical system stripped of $201,000 in copper wire, authorities said. The estimated damage to the business was $150,000, they said.
