RALEIGH, N.C. — A Johnston County man was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in federal prison in connection with a high-speed chase 2½ years ago in which he fired more than a dozen shots at State Highway Patrol troopers, authorities said.

Justin Lynn Chapman was a passenger in a car that troopers stopped in Raleigh for having a false license plate on Nov. 30, 2018, authorities said. As a trooper approached the car, it sped away.

The car passed several vehicles in no-passing zones, ran numerous stop signs, traveled left of center and reached speeds of 110 mph, authorities said. During the chase, which went into Johnston County, Chapman twice popped out of the car's sunroof to fire a total of 14 shots at the pursuing troopers, authorities said.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office used stop-sticks to disable the car on Woodall Dairy Road, just south of the N.C. Highway 242 exit off Interstate 40. Chapman then jumped from the car and fled on foot, but he was apprehended a short distance away.

Investigators found a 9mm handgun with a 30-round extended magazine in Chapman's possession, authorities said.

Chapman pleaded guilty last fall to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
