2 additional suspects arrested in Mebane ABC store robbery

MEBANE, N.C. — Orange County officials said Wednesday they arrested two additional men in connection with the robbery at a Mebane ABC store last month.

Jamel Williams and Trevon Ward, both 20 and of Durham, were charged with three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, one count of conspiracy ro commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

"We are pleased to have arrested all three individuals involved in this crime," Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said. "This was a very dangerous situation and we are grateful for the assistance of the Durham Police Department. Such partnerships essentially extend the borders of our county and allow us to work together to make both communities safer."

Williams was arrested Wednesday morning and Ward was arrested a few hours later, officials said.

Both men were being held Wednesday in the Orange County Detention Center under a $150,000 secured bond for the robbery counts, $150,000 secured bond for the kidnapping and conspiracy charges and $10,000 secured bond for the possession of a firearm by a felon charge.

Officials said Williams received another $10,000 secured bond for a pending charge of possession of a firearm by a felon in Durham. Both men are expected to appear in court in Hillsborough Thursday.

Authorities said two men robbed a clerk and customer at gunpoint in the ABC store on U.S. Highway 70 July 17 shortly before 9 p.m.

The suspects took the cash register drawer, the customer’s wallet and two bottles of liquor.

A witness followed the men’s vehicle, a gray Chevrolet Malibu, as they fled the scene, and then law enforcement officers began a chase.

One of the men was later identified as Bradford Perry, Jr., of Durham, who was identified as a suspect after investigators connected evidence in the vehicle to him.

Perry was charged with three counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, conspiring to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and a felony flee to elude. He was taken into custody July 19.

The suspects’ vehicle and a Highway Patrol cruiser crashed. One suspect fled the area on foot, and the other drove off.

The Highway Patrol cruiser was too heavily damaged to pursue the suspects’ vehicle. They are pursuing multiple traffic violations that occurred during the chase.
