CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — One person died on Thursday night in a shooting at University Gardens Condominiums in Chapel Hill.

Police were called to 800 Pritchard Avenue Extension around 11:35 p.m. When they arrived, they found 19-year-old Rahzel Tyreek Jenkins, 19, had been shot. Police said Jenkins died at UNC Hospitals.

A suspect or motive for the shooting was not released.

Jenkins' shooting death was the fourth homicide of 2022, compared to only one last year and zero in 2020.

Veda Murthy Krishnan said he's lived at the apartment complex where Thursday's shooting happened for two years. He went to sleep and didn't hear gunshots, but other neighbors reported hearing six to seven.

"I don't feel safe, but I'm careful with what I do. I'll be extra care, just to live here," said Krishnan.

The rent at the complex is lower than most places in Chapel Hill, Krishnan said, which is why a lot of families and children live in the complex.

"The rent is really attractive ... it's difficult to live in Chapel Hill so that's why a lot of people live here," he said.
