RALEIGH, N.C. — A 17-year-old girl was killed and another was injured after being hit by a truck Friday night in a hit-and-run on Old Milburnie Road in Raleigh.

A car occupied by five people got a flat tire around 7:30 p.m. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said three people from the car got out, including the two girls, and that's when a pickup truck came by, hit them and kept driving.

Tayona Smith died from spinal injuries suffered in the incident.

The mother of one of the people riding with the girls was on the way to help them change the tire and was devastated by the news.

"It's sad that people are out driving so fast," said Diesha Patterson. "It's so wrong and I just hope they catch whoever did this."

The other 17-year-old has non-life-threatening injuries. The other people in the car were not hurt.

Police said they believe the vehicle that hit the teens was a black Toyota Tundra. The girls were riding in what appeared to be a silver Toyota sedan.
