SANFORD, N.C. — A 16-year-old was arrested and charged Sunday afternoon in connection with a fatal shooting at a Sanford hotel, authorities said.

Randall Joseph Craven, 16, of 759 Lower Moncure Rd., is charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a handgun by a minor.

Sanford police said officers responded to the Econo Lodge Hotel on North Horner Boulevard around 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

Davion Orlando Newby, 18, and Rahki Orentheo Newby, 19, both of Sanford, had been shot inside a hotel room, police said.

Davion Newby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rahki Newby was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was in critical condition Sunday morning.

Henry Frank McLean, Newby's grandfather, said there's been a lot of gun violence involving young people in the area.

"The gun violence, the kids that's just picking up guns, just not having time to live and enjoy life," he said. "Young kids just dying...not even having a chance to go to school, see their family."

During the course of the investigation, a third victim, Malik Jamen Percell, 16, was found to have been shot in the abdomen, police said.

Craven was being held in the Lee County Jail without bond.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Sanford Police Department’s investigative division at 919-777-1051.
