RALEIGH, N.C. — A whopping 16 new flu deaths were reported in North Carolina, state health officials announced Thursday, bringing the death count this season to 52.
The 16 deaths were reported between Feb. 3 and Feb. 9. February and March is often peak season for the flu in North Carolina.
More than 400 people were treated in Wake County Emergency rooms for flu-like symptoms last week. Those numbers don't include people who visited urgent care centers for treatment.
One expert said the flu vaccine remains the best defense against the flu, and it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
