'Cowardly act': 15-year-old SC girl killed in drive-by shooting while visiting relatives

​"There are no printable words to describe my anger toward the person or people responsible for this cowardly act of shooting a gun from a car in the road at a residential complex during the wee hours of a Sunday morning, without any regard whatsoever for the lives of the people inside," Sheriff Barry Faile said in a statement posted to Facebook.

KERSHAW, S.C. — ​A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed inside an apartment complex while visiting her relatives in Kershaw, South Carolina.

Kershaw across the North Carolina-South Carolina border, about 60 miles away from Charlotte.

Authorities believe that the child was shot by a passing car while she was sleeping on her aunt's couch. The single gunshot wound killed her, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

​“There are no printable words to describe my anger toward the person or people responsible for this cowardly act of shooting a gun from a car in the road at a residential complex during the wee hours of a Sunday morning, without any regard whatsoever for the lives of the people inside,” Sheriff Barry Faile said in a statement posted to Facebook.

“A completely innocent 15-year-old girl is dead, and we will bring to bear all the resources we have to solve this shooting and put the responsible party or parties in jail," he added. "Please call us if you know anything about this shooting.”

An autopsy is being conducted for the 15-year-old's body.

No suspects or charges have been announced.
