Clayton, N.C. — A 15-year-old Clayton girl has been charged with attempted first degree murder after police said she attempted to shoot her mother with her father’s gun Sunday morning.
Authorities said the girl’s mother and father were sleeping in their home in the Garrison neighborhood off Amelia Church Road when the father got up to go to the bathroom and the daughter entered the bedroom.
The mother told police she awoke to a loud noise and saw her daughter standing at the foot of the bed. The mother told police the girl then ran from the room.
Officers, who initially responded to the home after someone dialed 911 to request a welfare check, found a bullet hole in the mattress near the place where the mother had been sleeping. Authorities said the mother was unharmed.
Authorities said the father’s handgun, which is typically kept in a holster by the side of the bed, was found hidden in the home.
The 15-year-old, who could not be identified because of her age, was being held at the Wake County Juvenile Detention Center on Sunday night.
