WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A 15-year-old was charged Wednesday with bringing a gun to Wake Forest High School.

Authorities said the teen, who was not identified because of their age, was found in possession of the weapon and taken into custody to face charges of possession of a firearm on school property.

Authorities said school officials were alerted to the presence of a weapon on campus through a tip from another student.

"While no one was threatened in any way, bringing a weapon to school is dangerous and unacceptable," school officials said in a statement.

The incident is the latest in a string of arrests in connection with weapons on school campuses in recent months.

On March 20, authorities said a “vigilant student” alerted administrators that a student had brought a weapon to Harnett Central Middle School.

That student was charged with possession of a weapon on educational property and an adult, to whom the gun belonged, was charged with failure to secure a firearm to protect a minor.

In February, a teen was taken into custody after a gun was found in their locker at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville. That incident came one day after a 17-year-old Cumberland County student threatened to shoot everybody on his school bus because he was mad that somebody was sitting in his seat.

Although schools are not allowed to discuss disciplinary action against individual students, state law mandates a 356-day suspension for any student found in possession of a gun on a school campus.
