HENDERSON, N.C. — A 14-year-old has died following a Tuesday afternoon shooting in Henderson, authorities said.
Vance County deputies responded to a reported shooting at 318 Foxfire Drive at about 12:20 p.m. and found the wounded teen, whom family members identified as Rosendo Montiel.
Montiel was taken to Duke University Hospital, in Durham, and his family took him off life support on Thursday.

Family members said Montiel had been reared by his grandmother after his mother died of cancer several years ago. Vance County Schools said he was an eighth-grader at Vance Middle School.

Authorities haven't released any details of the shooting, which the family said occurred in Montiel's front yard.

Henderson Mayor Eddie Ellington expressed his condolences for the teen's death.

“We as a community are saddened by yet another senseless death of our youth," Ellington said. "Lives are forever changed in a split second, and now, as the different families mourn, we are reminded once again, when guns fall in the hands of children, that the consequences are hard to accept.”

A 15-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, surrendered to authorities on Nov. 3, Sheriff Curtis Brame said

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Vance County Sheriff’s Office at 252-738-2200 or Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.
