It’s Easter weekend, which means that other than Easter egg hunts, there aren’t a lot of large community events on the calendar. Still, we have 13 options for you.

Easter events

Last weekend was the big weekend for Easter egg hunts, but there are plenty scheduled for this weekend too. Go Ask Mom’s Easter events calendar lists them all, including, but definitely not limited to:

Spring Break Guide

Go Ask Mom’s Spring Break Guide lists 15 ideas for family fun (and a few bonus suggestions thrown in there). Some activities are tied to specific dates or events, but you can check out many of them at any time. Events specific to this weekend include:
  • The first day of the month-long N.C. Science Festival is Sunday. It runs through April and features a variety of free and inexpensive science events across the state.
  • North Carolina Courage, the professional women’s soccer team, plays a game at 3 p.m., Saturday. An egg hunt is planned. And you can get 50 percent off North Stand tickets by donating used sports equipment during a drive hosted by Mix 101.5

And here are some other family events this weekend …

Raleigh

Beanstalk! The Musical! continues at Raleigh Little Theatre through Sunday. The show, part of the theater’s youth series, takes place in the newly renovated Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre. The show follows the adventures of Jack, a young boy with his head in the clouds and his nose in a book of fairy tales. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for kids 12 and under.
Historic Yates Mill County Park will hold a mill open house from 1 p.m to 3 p.m., Saturday. Guide tours are offered every 30 minutes. Tickets are $3 for kids ages 7 to 16 and $5 for adults. Learn more about the historic mill’s history and the work to preserve it.

Yates Mil, which is south of downtown Raleigh, also will host Nature’s April Fools from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday. Explore the ways that nature can be tricky and learn about ways that wildlife has evolved to increase their chances of survival and success. It’s free, registration is not required and it’s designed for all ages.

The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences’ Prairie Ridge Ecostation in west Raleigh features a similar event called April Fools! Even Nature Can Be Tricky from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Sunday. Best for kids in kindergarten to eighth grade, who must be accompanied by an adult. The program explores camouflage, mimicry and other sneaky nature topics with games, stories and a nature walk. It’s free.
The N.C. Museum of Art offers free family tours at 10:30 a.m., Saturday and Sunday. You can just show up for these 30-minute tours, which are best for kids ages 5 to 11 and their adults. This weekend's tours will feature girls and women behind and in front of some of the museum's favorite works of art.

Chapel Hill

Brumley Nature Preserve will host a Nature Detectives program from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday. For ages 4 and up. Registration is required for this one. Learn how to track local animals and make your own animal tracks to take home.

Durham

The Durham Bulls will open their season next week, but Duke’s baseball team has two games against Notre Dame at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. They’ll play at 1 p.m., Saturday, and noon, Sunday.

Asheboro

The North Carolina Zoo opens Birds in Flight this weekend. The new show gives zoo visitors a chance to see some amazing birds zoom through the air up close. The 25-minute show features majestic macaws, sun conures, falcons, hawks, vultures and owls as they demonstrate natural behaviors and perform aerial acrobatics under an open sky. The show is $3 plus zoo admission.
