DURHAM, N.C. — An 11-year-old boy was shot while walking in the 300 block of North Hyde Park Avenue Friday night after someone fired shots from a moving vehicle, authorities said.

According to investigators, the boy was shot in the thigh while walking with friends at about 9 p.m.

Brittany Brown, who lives on North Hyde Park Avenue, said she arrived home Friday night to a boy bleeding in her front yard.

"I hurried up and pulled up, but when I was going in the house I saw the little boy laying behind the tree," she said. "He was screaming, saying he was shot, so I just went over there and like just kept him calm and stuff."

A neighbor, who wanted to remain anonymous, described the 11-year-old as a good kid.

"He goes to school, comes home, does his homework, goes to basketball practice," he said. "He's just like my little brother."

The child was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No additional information was immediately available.
