RALEIGH, N.C. — World War II veteran and civil rights activist Millie Dunn Veasey has experienced a lot in the last century.

On Saturday, the St. Augustine's University alumna and living legend celebrated her 100th birthday.

Known affectionately as "Auntie Dear" to more than a dozen nieces and nephews, Veasey is not only considered the matriarch of her family, but the local community as well.

"She's a friend, she's a soror. She's a mentor. She is a very positive woman. She believes in education, and she does anything she can to help anyone," one said.

There was food, cake and plenty of hugs and kisses to go around, with love to and from the birthday girl.

"Honey, I'm happy to be here this beautiful," Veasey said. "I am overwhelmed, most appreciative for all of these people who came."
