RALEIGH, N.C. — Despite missing out on the $2.04 billion grand prize, there are 10 big winners in North Carolina from Tuesday's historic Powerball drawing, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced.

A single grand prize winning ticket was sold in California. The drawing, which normally happens on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, was delayed until Tuesday morning because of an issue processing lottery sales.

In North Carolina, there were 10 big winners, including a $100,000 prize winner and eight $50,000 winning tickets.

A $1 million winning ticket was sold at a Gas Station on South College Road in Wilmington. To win $1 million you need to match all five white balls. That ticket was one of 22 nationally to take home a million prize.

A total of 343,323 winning tickets were sold in the state.

Since Aug. 6, North Carolinians have won a total of three $1 million prizes, seven $150,000 prizes, six $100,000 prizes and 39 $50,000 prizes.

Powerball drawing delayed by hours

“Powerball requires all 48 participating lotteries to submit their sales and play data prior to the winning numbers being selected. Once Powerball receives the outstanding submission, the drawing can proceed," the Multi-State Lottery Association said in a statement.

Nearly three hours after the scheduled 10:59 p.m. EST Monday drawing, the association told The Associated Press: “It’s against our policy to name the lottery that is experiencing the delay.”

The game is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

WRAL News has learned that North Carolina was not the state that experienced the delay.

On Tuesday morning, the association said in a new statement that Powerball was “in communication with the lottery throughout the night as it works to resolve the issue.”

Like the rest of America, Powerball is eager to hold its drawing for the world record jackpot, however, protecting the integrity of the draw is of upmost importance, even if that means a further delay,” the statement said.

The winning numbers and recorded video of the drawing were posted to the Powerball website and YouTube channel around 9 a.m., a delay of about 10 hours.
