DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police on Sunday were investigating after a 1-year-old child was shot while playing outside her home at McDougald Terrace.

“It’s like blow after blow but we’ll get though it,” said Ashley Canady, the resident council president.

Back in January, many of the residents were evacuated and moved to hotels because of carbon monoxide issues. Canady says they’ve had a rough year.

“You’re hit with corona virus and now residents are starting to return home - only to see that near their community there’s a shooting,” she said.

“Children should be able to come outside and play without having to worry about being hit by bullets “

Police said the gunfire was apparently meant for someone else. They did not make an arrest and said the shooter drove away from the scene.

Multiple people called 911 in Durham to report the shooting, which happened just after 4 p.m.

The child was outside of her home at 1215 Truman St. with a parent, police said, and was hit by accident.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
