CLAYTON, N.C. — Johnston County authorities said Monday that one of three suspects is in custody in connection with a weekend drive-by shooting that killed a teenaged boy and injured another man.

Joshua Caleb Draughon, 18, of Garner, was arrested Monday when he appeared at the Wake County Courthouse on unrelated charges. Draughon has been charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, police said in a written statement. It was not immediately clear if bond has been set for Draughon.

Kaylen Middleton, 15, of Clayton, was pronounced dead at the scene while Desmond Barnes, 20, also of Clayton, was shot in the foot during the incident outside an apartment complex located in the 100 block of Blackthorne Court.

Kaylen was a student at Cleveland High School and enjoyed playing sports, his mother said.

Barnes has been treated and released from the hospital after he was rushed there Saturday for medical care.

Police have said they believe the victims knew the suspects. The suspects were believed to be in a beige-colored Chevy Tahoe with front-end damage unrelated to the shooting.

Cash Orsega says he and his wife rushed outside when they saw the blue lights from police cruisers.

"That's when we saw the body of the young man who lives next door and the paramedics were here," he said, adding that Kaylen seemed like a good kid.

"We've seen him out and some of his friends hanging out," Orsega said. "He definitely seemed like a polite kid."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Johnston County Sheriff's Office at (919) 989-5000.
