UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Two people were shot at a pool party in Union County near Hemby Bridge early Saturday morning. One person was killed and the other is being treated for injuries at a local hospital.

The Union County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of multiple gunshots at a pool party on the 15900 block of Idlewild Road. The property was rented out by one person for two days through Airbnb, officials said.

Crime Scene Investigators and the State Bureau of Investigation are looking into the shooting.

"Detectives are still sorting through details and gathering information about this event and do not have any suspect details to release," a statement from the the sheriff's office said. "However, the shooting does not appear to be a random event."

The man who died had been driven to the hospital in a private vehicle. A second man taken by ambulance is still in the hospital as of Sunday morning, receiving treatment for a gunshot wound, officials said.

There were a large number of people attending the pool party on Saturday night and early Saturday morning, according to officials.

The shooting occurred southeast of the city, outside the 485 loop and southeast of downtown Charlotte.

“We are horrified by the reported incident and have suspended the listing and booking guest as we urgently investigate," an Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement to WCNC.

Airbnb said that they ban parties in their listings, and this this gathering was "unauthorized."

On August 20, Airbnb banned house parties worldwide in an effort to clean up its reputation and comply with coronavirus-related limits on gatherings. Only 16 guests are allowed per Airbnb property.
