DURHAM, N.C. — One person died after a Sunday evening crash involving a GoTriangle bus and a box truck near the entrance to The Streets at Southpoint Mall in Durham.

The box truck, which was eastbound on Renaissance Parkway, made a left turn onto Rolando Drive into the path of a westbound GoTriangle bus at about 3:45 p.m., and the two vehicles collided in the intersection, police said.

Jacob Kipserem, 28, of Buies Creek, the driver of the box truck, was thrown from the vehicle and died, according to police. He was a 2016 graduate of Campbell University. Kipserem was a cross-country runner during his time at the school.

Campbell Athletics released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened at the passing of former Campbell student-athlete, Jacob Kipserem. Jacob was not only a tremendous runner with tireless work ethic, but an enormous part of our program and the Campbell community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jacob’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.”

Three people from the bus, including the driver, were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Durham police blocked the intersection of Renaissance Parkway and Rolando Drive for more than four hours while investigating the crash.

No charges are pending in the crash, police said, adding that alcohol and speed weren't factors.

The crash remains under investigation.
