1,900 lose power in downtown Cary when tree snaps in half
At 3 a.m., more than 1,900 customers in Cary were without power after heavy winds brought down a tree at East Chatham Street and Ward Street in downtown Cary. Power had been restored to most customers by 4:30 a.m.
SNAPPED OVERNIGHT LIVING THOUSANDS WITHOUT POWER AT ONE POINT. THE POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED TO SOME FOLKS. NIA HARDEN IS LIVE ON EAST CHATHAM STREET. >> Reporter: LIKE YOU SAID, THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS WITHOUT POWER EARLIER THIS MORNING. THANKFULLY MOST OF THEM HAVE THEIR POWER RESTORED. ABOUT 20 ARE STILL WAITING BUT ONE OF THE PEOPLE EFFECTIVE WAS A MAN WHO OWNS THIS RIGHT HERE. THIS WAS ON BOARD AND IT WAS DARK INSIDE BUT WHEN HE WENT INTO WORK TODAY. HE WENT TO GO CHECK HIS FLOWERS AND HE TELLS US THAT A LOT OF HIS FLOWERS ARE DEAD. THEY ARE NO GOOD BECAUSE OF THIS TREE THAT SNAPPED. AND LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THIS SCENE. YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE SEVERAL CREWMEMBERS FROM DUKE ENERGY THAT ARE HERE WORKING ON POLES. THIS TREE IS A TOTAL MESS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD HERE AND WE ARE TOLD THAT THEY WILL BE HERE THROUGHOUT THE MORNING TO CLEAN IT UP BECAUSE THEY HAVE LINES THAT ARE DOWN. WE ARE TOLD THAT PART OF THE UTILITY POLE IS DAMAGED AS WELL. AND SO, A LOT THAT THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DO HERE NEAR BOURBON PARK WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE DECIDED TO CLEAR OFF THIS AREA.
