Posted — UpdatedCHARLOTTE, N.C. — After nearly 40 years, the only wooden roller coaster to cross a state line was demolished Thursday at Carowinds amusement park, in Charlotte.
Carowinds announced in May that Thunder Road, a behemoth roller coaster that required more than a half-million feet of treated lumber to construct, would shut down on July 26 to make room for newer park attractions.
The roller coaster opened in 1976 and was a family favorite of many.
