'This Is Us' recap: 'Katie Girls' was jam-packed with all the feels

Tuesday's episode, "Katie Girls," was jam-packed with all the feels. We learned more about Rebecca and Jack's beginning, Kevin dives into his father's time in Vietnam - including a "Homeland" Carrie Mathison-style wall reference, which I very much appreciated, and Kate undergoes a dramatic egg retrieval procedure.

Episode 3 picks up where episode 1 left off - the moment where Jack drives to Rebecca's house but sees her with another man.

This episode continues that story and gives us more insight as to how Jack and Rebecca became a couple in the first place. Based on the intro montage, we can only assume Rebecca was never going to be one of those "typical" housewives. We see her in shop class where she meets Alan - the front-door mystery man.

When Alan shows up at the front door, it is clear they have at least a three-year history. As the episode progresses, we learn that Alan once invited Rebecca to live with him in London, but that she turned down his invite. Later, at dinner with his parents, Alan talks about moving to New York, a place where he can write and Rebecca can pursue her dream of singing. It sounds lovely, but Rebecca "has a feeling" about another man - enter Jack Pearson.

This Is Us

As Jack drives away from Rebecca's house, he goes home to find his dad yelling at his mother about a sandwich. Jack, who clearly has had enough of this, tells his mother to pack her things so that he can take her to stay with a friend. On the way, the two stop for a coffee cake. Jack runs into Rebecca in a grocery aisle (do meet-cutes like this happen in real life?!) and it turns out the friend lives in the same neighborhood as Rebecca. The two have a conversation about hopes and dreams - along with some clues about how to meet again.

Rebecca later shows up at the mother's friend’s house, where they have their (what we will call) second date. Jack gets up to wash the dishes, and Rebecca is right there by his side. It is pretty clear the two are in this together, and they plan a drive - to Los Angeles?! - casual right?

Back in the present day, the Pearson kids don't seem to have it so easy in this episode.

Following Kevin's big premiere, he is now a Beth-proclaimed "movie star." The Big Three are a weepy mess, but Randall takes no time calling out Kate on the comment she made about being the only one to carry on a piece of their father. Even though Kate didn't mean it that way, it starts a heated convo, and Kate runs off crying.

Being just a day away from her big procedure, Beth tells Randall to call his sister to apologize. Beth also reveals that she, Toby and Miguel have a group chat in which they talk about how messed up the other three are. And while it may be "mostly GIFs," their analysis doesn't seem too far off. Of course, in Randall (and Jack) fashion, he ends up flying to LA to be there for Kate's surgery.

Kate's procedure seems to go well. They get eight eggs, but not before a little drama. The poor girl can't catch a break, and had trouble clearing the anesthesia. While shes put under, she has a dream where she fights with the two younger versions of herself. Of course, Jack is also there. She tells her teen-self that she ends up OK, but not before a long rough spell, and that she will be a mom. She tells her dad goodbye and wakes up to Toby's smiling face. I can only hope this procedure worked.

Meanwhile, Kevin, the "movie star," has an interview with NPR's Terry Gross. Zoe may be more excited than Kevin, but the interview sparks all these question about his father's time in Vietnam. Kevin realizes he doesn't know much and seems to blame himself for never asking questions - something Zoe is great at. She helps him connect with a man who served with Jack and, based on next week's preview, it seems they will get answers very soon.

Other things:

  • Beth gets let go from her job. It is time for her to be a "soloist?"
  • Randall (trying to be a superhero - like his father) says he plans to run against the existing councilman in an effort to help the people he loves at the community center
