Winter is still holding on in North Carolina and the region will have one more chance for snow before spring weather moves in.

Temperatures on Friday will remain chilly with abundant sunshine, but the weekend will begin to turn gloomy Saturday afternoon.

“There could be quite a bit of precipitation late Saturday, Saturday night and Sunday morning and some of it could be frozen,” WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said. “This is the last hurrah as we get toward the end of March.”

Regional Temperatures

Maze said wet weather should move in around 3 p.m. Saturday, but any snowflakes will have a hard time making it to the ground.

Some of the wet weather could transition to snow overnight and early Sunday morning, as temperatures drop, but Maze said it’s likely that only the northern counties will see significant impact.

“It’s our northern counties that would see any accumulating snow, but like last week, likely only on grassy and elevated surfaces,” Maze said, noting that anything that does stick would likely melt quickly because of warm ground temperatures.

Raleigh may see some flakes, but will not see any accumulation, Maze said.

Spring weather will make a welcome appearance in North Carolina my mid-week with temperatures in the 70s by Thursday.
