DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham community is mourning 16-year-old Torry Trueluck, who was killed in a shooting around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Liberty and Elizabeth Streets.

Friends and mentors said the Northern High School student was a standout on and off the basketball court, and he loved the people in his life.

Andre Jones coached Trueluck in basketball since he was around 7-years old.

Jones said Trueluck was always the captain, and he called him the son he never had.

"It was tough for me, receiving that phone call," Jones said. "Me and a lot of the coaches, we always pushed him hard because we saw something in him, and it is unfortunate the circumstances happened the way they happened."

Jones says Trueluck has family in that area, and that he was shot in the chest while he was walking down the street.

Trueluck was rushed in a private car to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

"He will always be remembered as a champion," Jones said. "He was an overall good person. I mean, he was always smiling, cracking jokes. The life of the party."

Jones calls Trueluck one of the good ones, and said the entire community is devastated by the news.

"Everybody here is trying to maintain and keep their composure, but it is rough," Jones said. "Everybody is scared."

According to Durham police, there are still no arrests in the case.

"You hear about crimes in this city all the time, but it hits home when it's one of your own," Jones said. "If we could figure out something to help our kids because we are losing them by the dozen."
