‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ Will Open in San Francisco

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is heading to San Francisco. The Tony-winning play will open at the Curran Theater in fall 2019.

This will be the fourth location of the play, following London, New York and an Australian production slated to premiere in Melbourne in early 2019. The play is set 19 years after the conclusion of the final novel in J.K. Rowling’s series, and follows Harry Potter and his son, Albus, who arrives at Hogwarts and must grapple with his famous father’s past, present and future. Written by Jack Thorne and based on a story by Rowling, Thorne and John Tiffany, the show won six Tony Awards this month, including best play.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is the most expensive Broadway nonmusical play ever, with a large cast and crew and plenty of high-tech special effects. And it must be seen in two parts, whether on one or two days. But it is also setting box-office records.

The Curran reopened after a renovation in January 2017 with 1,600 seats. “Soft Power,” a musical from David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori, is currently playing there. “Dear Evan Hansen” will hit the Curran this fall, and other critically acclaimed musicals like “Phantom of the Opera” and “Waitress” will also arrive in the city.
