'Far from over:' Wake County student reassignment is balancing act for parents
Parents had another opportunity to sound off Wednesday night as Wake County moves through the process of the 2019-2020 school enrollment place.
Posted — UpdatedThe latest information session at Leesville Road High School on Wednesday night was a balancing act between parents who are OK with the plan and others who don’t like the way things are shaping up.
Proximity, potential academic and emotional impact a move could have and the switch from traditional calendar schools were top of mind for parents Wednesday night.
For Wake County school leaders, they must address overcrowding in some schools, underutilization in others and the need to fill new schools.
In district seven, which was the focus of Wednesday night’s meeting, Morrisville Elementary School and Panther Creek High School students are looking at reassignment in the first draft of the proposal.
“I do expect to see changes, so this is far from over and the process will be long,” said parent Kathy Mural. “Everybody does have the opportunity to provide input, and they should. I am convinced that the school system does want to make this workable for everyone, which will be difficult.”
“If you’ve been a part of this process in the past, you know that the first draft looks very different than the last draft and all of the changes that are made have been because the parents have delivered their feedback to us,” Wake County schools spokeswoman Lisa Luten said.
Three more drafts of the reassignment proposal are expected before a final decision is made in November.
