GARNER, N.C. — A Garner police officer and his family are receiving an outpouring of support from the community after they lost their home in a fire Friday.

The Myer family was at the beach when their home caught fire, so they have a few suitcases full of belongings, but Lt. Walt Myer said he only has two shirts left.

Myer got a call around 3 a.m. Friday that his home burned down and the house was a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Following the fire, the Myer family was surprised with a GoFundMe account, where the community has rallied around the family and raised more than $3,000.

“It’s so humbling. I’ve spent 25 years serving and I put on a uniform, that’s what I’m supposed to do, and I have people who, that’s not their job, that take the time to help me, it’s just extremely humbling,”

Myer said one person even rented a hotel for the family not far from where their house burned down.

"We are really blessed. Even though we've lost everything, we have out family," Kertia Myer said.
