CLAYTON, N.C. — Clayton police are searching for a man accused of attempting to steal beer and other items from a Clayton convenience store early Thursday morning.

Clayton police said the man entered the Speedway gas station at 291 N.C. Highway 42 at about 1 a.m., shoved a three-pack of Bud Light beer under his shirt and stuffed another unknown item into his pants.

Seeing the man’s obvious attempt at theft, police said the store clerk said, “Come on man, really?” before following the man as he left the store.

Following a confrontation with the clerk, authorities said the man placed the beer on the counter, but he left the store with the item he concealed in his pants.

The man was last seen driving east on N.C. 42 in a blue Dodge Charger that had no license plate and broken brake lights, police said.

Anybody with information is asked to call Clayton police at 919-553-4611.
