RALEIGH, N.C. — The SPCA of Wake County is wall to wall kittens, so the organization has slashed its adoption fees for cats and kittens to help clear the shelter.

"Whatever color you want, whatever personality you want, we have it," adoption director Kim Flowers said.

June through August is known as "kitten season," and overcrowding in shelters is not unusual, especially because the SPCA takes in extra animals from other shelters so they don't have to be euthanized because they're out of space.

"They just keep coming," Flowers said. "Of course, we don't like to say no, and we want to take in as many as we can, so, yeah, now is the time, We've got to get those adoption up."

That's why the SPCA is offering a special – half-price adoptions for all kittens and cats through the weekend, or "buy one, get one free," Flowers said, because it's a good idea to adopt two together.

"You know, they're little babies, so they want to have another friend to run around with and play with and keep themselves occupied," she said. '[It's] a little bit less trouble for you."

The reduced adoption fees in effect include spay/neuter surgery, deworming, basic feline vaccines, a wellness exam and a microchip. Those services have an estimated value of $300.

"They're ready to go, ready to walk out the door," she said.

Latoya Lesesne and her daughter, Cadence, picked one up on Wednesday.

"He was cute and adorable, and he was sweet," 8-year-old Cadence said of her new tabby cat – her first pet.

"I saw on the website that they were in overflow and were looking to get some adopted so that they can make room for more," Lesesne said. "So, I said, 'Hey, we got some free time, let's go ahead and check them out.' And she fell in love with one."

The SPCA is at 200 Petfinder Lane, off Tryon Road, and adoption center hours are 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
