You know it's summer vacation when ...

Posted July 15

Summertime! Swimming, barbecues, family vacations and fun! So what exactly is it about summer with kids that makes parents want to pull all their hair out, bang their heads repeatedly against a wall and then cry hysterically?

1. Plans go out the window

You scour Pinterest, envisioning yourself as the perfect hostess of a summer full of amazing science experiments, educational field trips and gorgeous crafts. After the first week, your schedule goes out the window and you decide that getting the little humans dressed every day is an acceptable alternative.

2. Seems like a logical alternative

Your kid runs out of underwear and your response is, "Go put on a swim diaper."

3. Love those late movie nights

You wake up with a neighborhood-movie-night hangover from all the Shasta and Red Vines.

4. It sounded like a good idea

You buy new summer toys and games, thinking you'll keep the kids busy for a week. They play with the toys for half an hour before getting bored and then they discover you sitting in the closet with your Dr. Pepper.

5. Please be able to play

The phrase "He/she can't play" makes you feel like your insides are breaking into tiny pieces as you contemplate the depths of infinity that this day will resemble.

6. That's fine, right?

Your children's diet consists of ice pops, string cheese and pizza you've microwaved ten times by the end of its usefulness.

7. At least you made it out the door

You can't find your kids matching pairs of shoes to save your life on that one day you really need them. So, you leave the house with each kid wearing two different shoes to church.

8. Teachers are actually heroes

You decide to start a petition to raise teachers' salaries in your school district.

9. Can't they entertain themselves?

You immediately curl up into fetal position in the corner when you hear the words, "I'm bored."

10. Definitely a win

You're pleasantly surprised when the kids don't come home sopping wet, covered in mud wearing some other kid's clothing.

11. Oh please no

You have nightmares about your kids' school going on permanent strike, and you wake up in a cold sweat.

12. Thank you, Netflix

You praise the heavens above for those people who invented Netflix, and resolve to send them lots of chocolate and homemade Pinterest thank you cards as payment for helping you keep the kids in one place for longer than five minutes.

13. It's all worth it

You wake up one morning loving the longer days and extra time with your kids so much that you wish summer could last forever. But the next day, the kids go back to school.
