HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 85 on Sunday injured one person a week after another wrong-way collision, this one fatal, occurred less than 20 miles away.

Around 3:30 a.m., emergency officials responded to the segment of I-85 that splits with I-40 in Hillsborough near mile marker 160.

According to officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a motorist was traveling the wrong way on the interstate for a "short period of time" before crossing back to the correct side. In the process of correcting his or her direction, the driver sideswiped another car and was transported to the hospital.

The identity of the driver and his or her condition remains unknown.

This incident occurred less than one week after two people were killed and several others were injured on Interstate 85 near East Club Boulevard (Exit 179) in Durham.
In the last 16 years, there have been more than 500 wrong way crashes on North Carolina's freeways and interstates. Those accidents killed 145 people and injured 643 more. To address crashes such as these, the Department of Transportation is currently involved in a number of studies, at the state level and internationally.
