— An accident caused a long traffic jam on Interstate 40 in Orange County during rush hour Friday night.

Police said that the back-up stretched for more than 9 miles at one point. Traffic video showed the congestion going back to the junction of I-40 and U.S. 15-501.

Heather Poole, 36, was traveling eastbound on I-40 when she lost control of the vehicle around 5:45 pm, said officers.

Her vehicle traveled into the median, crashed through the cable barrier and was struck head-on by a semi-truck, officers said.

Police closed one westbound land and one eastbound lane for around an hour.

Poole was airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where she was in good condition early Saturday morning, according to police.

"It is funny how people assume she was using a cellphone..... It could have been a multitude of other things that occurred."

Ahhh, a voice of reason among the shrill psychics :)

"Some people can multi-task while others cannot. I'll put down my cellphone while driving when others stop reading, putting on make up, and discipling/feeding/playing with their children while driving."

So you're saying that you can multi-task and others cannot or are you saying that since there are other stupid people out there doing things you'll do the same?

    What am I missing here?

Here we go again, driver lost control. WHY? Why, did she loose control? Speeding? answering cell the phone?, texting? Look at all the havoc that was caused by either her or another drivers selfish act of either speeding and lane changes w/o signals, etc. Single car accident?
People the catch fence does what it's designed to do. Catch vehicles. If the vehicle flys over the fence, guess what that means? Physics and the law of. If this accident was her fault from doing something she had no business doing while driving, I have 0 sympathy and hope she learned her lesson. The pain and agony is deserved.

I am glad that the person is going to be ok that was involved in the accident. My only problem with the transportation department is those million dollar electronic signs that rarely provide any messages. It would be helpful if DOT would use these signs to alert drivers to accidents, delays or other construction messages.

I am glad that the lady is ok but something has to change. I think it is time to ban cell phone use on the road or require a headset like NY so that your hands are free at all times. It is unfortunate that people try to do multiple task while driving at such high speeds. Please think about how lives could be lost with one simple mistake.

9 mile traffic jam....wow. At least the lady wasn't killed.

almost every car I passed today on I40, a person was bangin away on a cellphone, changing lanes w/o signaling or just cutting people off.
Maybe the carmakers need to install cellphones IN the car themselves so the driver can keep both hands on the wheel.

I was stuck in traffic yesterday while AirCare landed to take her away. I saw the wreckage. I can honestly say I am shocked she is alive and in GOOD condition. By the looks of her car, I thought the driver was most likely killed. I am curious how her vehicle, what appeared to be, AT ONE TIME, a Honda Accord was able to go over the cables.... I saw them that night and they were still in tact. I guess the sheer speed and momentum of her vehicle propelled her over it..... Anyway, glad she is alive....
