SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A wreck involving a military vehicle, two passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer slowed traffic along Interstate 95 in Johnston County Friday evening.

The wreck occurred around 7 p.m. near mile marker 89 south of Smithfield. No serious injuries were reported.

The military vehicle, which was carrying National Guard soldiers from Smithfield, was on the shoulder of the I-95 south when it attempted to merge back onto the road, Highway Patrol troopers said.

Traffic began slowing, but a tractor trailer was unable to slow quick enough. It hit one vehicle, pushing it out of the way, then struck a second vehicle, knocking it into the military vehicle.

The impact sent the military vehicle down an embankment, where it overturned.

The tractor trailer driver, whose name has not been released, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
