Wreck on I-95 claims life of teenager

Posted June 14, 2009

— A man traveling from Virginia on Interstate 95 lost his life Saturday night, the state Highway Patrol reported.

Jesse Wood Sheppard, 18, of 825 Salem Highway in Stuart, Va., was a passenger in a car traveling northbound. Driver Robert Corns, 19, of Critz, Va., attempted to change lanes just south of Benson, the state Highway Patrol spokesman said, and clipped the car to the left. As a result, Corns' car ran off the road and flipped. Sheppard was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle.

Corns was treated and released from WakeMed. He was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and released from the Johnston County Jail under a $5,000 bond.

Paramedics transported another passenger, Christopher Bryce Howell, 19, also of Va.,  to WakeMed. He was listed in good condition Sunday evening.

The driver of the clipped vehicle was not injured.

Lovesomegolo: seems like you have no life other than reading everyone else's GOLO messages. If you were smart, you would be praying for the family right now instead you are in everything else up here! taxpayers money......

did you not read the other responses? If you were smart you would know that it saves more than it kills.

I wish WRAL would do a yearly round up of people the die needlessly because they are not wearing their seat belt, and every child/teen should have to read each article. Its is really sad that these young people don't get it.

LovesomeGolo: I really hope no one in this boy's family reads the cold and heartless post that you left. Who are you to say that if he was wearing a seatbelt-that he would be alive and that this is his fault? I'm sure if he knew that this was going to happen, well yeah-he might have done something different. IF you were a smart person, you would know that a seat belt can save you but it can also kill you...just depends on the accident. Research that. If it's your time to go, not even a seat belt will save you. FYI: think about other people before you speak.

I don't understand why he would get charged for his death..I know the wreck was his fault but if his passenger had on his seatbelt he probably would still be alive. Thats his fault.

"Sheppard was not wearing a seat belt, and was ejected from the vehicle."

Aargh! Why not? Darn it, this could have been prevented. ALWAYS buckle up! And make sure your passengers do, too. God bless.
