NEW BERN, N.C. — A head-on collision outside New Bern Friday killed a Zebulon woman, who was the wife of a retired deputy and the mother of an active deputy in Wake County.

State troopers said that around noon, a Pontiac car driven by Edward Servin, 21, of Bayboro, crossed the center line on N.C. Highway 55, near Broad Creek Road. The Pontiac struck an oncoming pickup truck driven by Joseph Tarlton, 64, of Zebulon.

Carolyn Tarlton, 65, who was a passenger in the pickup, died, troopers said.

Joseph Tarlton was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Troopers said his condition had stabilized and he was talking Saturday.

Troopers charged Servin with driving with a revoked license, driving left of center and careless and reckless driving.

Phyllis Stevens, spokeswoman for the Wake County Sheriff's Office, confirmed that Joseph Tarlton was a retired deputy and that the couple's son is currently a deputy with the department.
