Wreck involving bicycle, dump truck closes Aviation Parkway intersection

Posted September 26, 2013

— Morrisville police shut down Aviation Parkway at Evans Road Thursday morning due to a wreck involving a dump truck and bicyclist.

Officers responded to the area before 8 a.m. after the dump truck, which was loaded with rocks, overturned. The bicyclist involved in the wreck suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, police said.

It wasn't clear what caused the wreck, but authorities were directing traffic at the intersection because the traffic signal was out.

Drivers were warned to avoid the area until at least 9 a.m.

@buster102007 -- on Cary Parkway tonight there were 4 bikers riding side by side and causing EVERYONE to have to get into the left lane to get around them. Nice move Bikers during rush hour.....and they wonder why so many auto drivers curse them.

I'd like to give my personal "thanks" to this mornings biker who ran the red light this morning that caused the dump truck to wreck trying to avoid hitting you worse than you were hit and take out the traffic light. Tonight we all got to pay for your careless disregard for traffic laws since the intersection has been made a 3-way stop while the traffic light is replaced. While I am glad no one was seriously injured this morning, I STILL think cyclists all too often impede the flow of traffic. Tonight's right home was just awesome (insert sarcasm font here).

Citizens Arrayest - Absolutely not. If you ride two wide you will either get a tickets or ran off the road. Try me.

When a cyclist is riding on the right edge of the road there is plenty of room for a standard vehicle to pass. IT's not the cyclists fault if you are slowed because you are scared to pass because you over estimate the width of your vehicle. If there is a group of cyclist riding 2 wide, well then you are just going to have to be patient. Its called SPEED LIMIT for a reason, its not against the law to go 20 in a 35....You should leave earlier.. besides you're not going anywhere important anyway.

Anyone on the roads and highways should absolutely follow the rules and regulations. That means mopeds and bikers too.

Okay, enough about bikes; can we talk about texting and driving for awhile?

"Up until now, for the most part, I have been on the side of the bicycle riders. But I am changing that opinion due to things like this. 'The biker ran the red light'

And I guess motor vehicles - Cars, trucks, suvs, etc do not run any red lights?

This goes back to the comment that I always make about cyclists...if we have to share the road then they should have all of the costs that we have. From other posts, it seems like this guy ran the light and caused the accident. Does he have insurance to pay for the damages to the dump truck? Chances are that he does not therefore the trucks owner/insurance will have to foot the bill. How is this fair? For every post complaining about cyclists, there are 15 whining about people bashing them. Share the cost and share the road.
