— An elderly woman died after her car collided head-on with a pickup truck near the junction of U.S. highways 1 and 421 Bypass on Thursday afternoon, Sanford police said.

The woman was driving north in the southbound lanes around 2 p.m., police said, though it was not immediately clear which road she was on.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pickup truck driver was pinned in and had to be extricated, according to local radio station WWGP. He was flown to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where he was listed in serious condition.

Traffic was temporarily blocked along the highways.

The phrase "woman driver" is usually pejorative. Whatever caused this wreck, the driver's being a woman probably wasn't a factor.

At some point with an aging pop. needs to be a serious discussion of people giving up the keys. My dad drove up untill recently and he should have quit 5 yrs ago, riding with him was NOT FUN.

this kind of thing seems to typicaly turn out to be dementia, lack of, or too many meds. she likely had no clue what was going on, and may have normaly been a very cautious driver.

The woman that caused the accident--what is her age? supposed to be taking any meds? taking any meds?
