DURHAM, N.C. — Southbound lanes of Interstate 85 South near Avondale Drive reopened Thursday about eight hours after a wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a small car carrier.

Authorities responded to the area, near Exit 178, about 1:30 a.m. after the tractor-trailer, which was carrying fresh produce, struck the car carrier. The tractor-trailer came to rest on its side, blocking all but the left shoulder of southbound I-85.

Debris from the wreck was scattered for nearly half a mile on the highway, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the other driver was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities blocked as many as four lanes of southbound traffic as crews worked to clean up debris in the highway.
