Wreck causes traffic backup on I-40

Posted February 22, 2010

— A wreck blocked traffic on Monday evening along Interstate 40 eastbound between Lake Wheeler Road and Gorman Street.

A vehicle hit another vehicle after the driver swerved to avoid a couch that was in the middle of the road, authorities said. One of the vehicles caught on fire after the collision.

One person was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was backed up for nearly an hour while the crash was cleared.

I was behind a commercial truck that appeared to be equipped to carry sand and other types of loads when the bar that secured the back doors flew off and nearly came through my windshield. I had to swerve to keep from hitting it, then another 18 wheeler hit it, sent it flying in front of me again, and I ran over it. The first truck didn't so much as slow down. All of this was on I-40 with a fairly significant amount of traffic. Yes, people should secure their loads and also make sure the equipment used to secure them is secure.

yea people need to secure their mess. i was going down the road one morning on my way to work and some fool come flying around a curve in the opposite direction with his junk on the back of his truck and a table come flying off and bounced in my lane and then bounced somewhere else. thankfully it barely missed crashing into the front windshield of my car. the driver made no attempt to stop and pick up the table or move it.

did you say a COUCH?? That's a new one - a couch in he road? anyway to find and charge the driver who didn't tie down the couch? They should have to pay for all losses, including time for all those that got stuck because of their poor judgment.

So why did the chicken cross the road....he didn't he was looking for the remote in his couch..
