Friday is DTV transition day!

After years of planning, television broadcasts in analog format will cease Friday and be replaced by a digital signal. You can get information by calling the FCC's hotline at 1-888-Call FCC (1-888-225-5322) or reading our DTV help page.

If you do not have cable, satellite or a newer TV with a digital tuner, you will not be able to watch TV unless you have a converter box.

WRAL-TV made the switch at 12:55 p.m.

Viewers who get our signal over the air, using an antenna, will need to rescan their channels in order to find WRAL on our new frequency. The easiest way to do that is to simply unplug your TV for five minutes and plug it back in!

If you have an antenna TV and have not installed a digital TV converter box, there are plenty in stock at area Targets, Wal-Marts, Best Buys and other retailers. The federal government is offering a $40 coupon toward the cost of a converter box. You can apply for the coupon by phone or online but you will have to wait for the coupon to arrive in the mail.

Where to get help

WRAL experts answered questions about the transition live online earlier Friday.

You can also get information by calling the FCC's hotline at 1-888-Call FCC (1-888-225-5322) or reading our DTV help page.

To ask questions in person, visit one of the designated DTV help locations listed below.

Hyped up nearly as much as the piggieflu!

I grew up in Dickenson County..close to Wise County in a small town called McClure VA

Hey tooter9565, I grew up in the mountains (boonies) of Va also. Where did you live in the Va mountains?

got the box on two tv's. nothing works today. Nice guys!!

I realize that some folks live out in the boonies (I grew up in the mountains of VA and didn't have cable until I was about 13 or so)and I understand some people not wanting to pay the high cost of cable etc. but folks we have known about this change for what seems like forever, and there are still going to be millions without T.V.? I just don't get it...why have so many not gotten the message? I did my part and made sure my fellow neighbors esp. the elderly where prepared...I even purchased a couple of boxes for them...
