Co-worker shares creative craft
Posted January 25, 2011
I have so many talented co-workers here at WRAL, and I’d like to introduce you to one of them.
Sally Smith, who works on our assignment desk, has a really neat hobby – making jewelry. She agreed to share some pictures and tell us how she got interested in the craft.
“I started out a couple years ago just experimenting with jewelry making, and I quickly fell in love with it! Making jewelry is such a creative outlet for me. It's funny how I actually have to be in a creative mood to make the pieces … otherwise, they won't turn out the way I'd like them to.
I usually stick to making earrings, but I've also made some necklaces and bracelets before. For earrings, I like really colorful stuff! I use all sorts of beads: Swarovski crystals, stones, wood, glass, plastic … and I also use lots of freshwater pearls!
I was doing this for a long time just for fun and giving pairs of earrings away as presents. But some friends of mine kept telling me I should try to sell some of my jewelry! I have posted a website where you can purchase the jewelry on Etsy.com. I usually charge about $8 per pair.
I made the jewelry for my coworker Mary Alice's wedding. She bought all the beads and supplies in the colors and styles that matched each bridesmaid's dress and just told me to be creative! It turned out really nice, and that is where I got started making bracelets and necklaces.”
Thanks to Sally for sharing her story and pictures.
