If you watch WRAL News, you might have noticed that someone's been missing lately. Reporter Dan Bowens said goodbye to our WRAL family recently and accepted a job as a general assignment reporter at a New York City TV station, WNYW FOX 5 News.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to return home and work for the station I grew up watching," he said.
Just yesterday, Dan tweeted about his most-recent story.
Dan worked at WRAL for 4 ½ years and previously reported at WINK-TV in Fort Myers, Fla., and KEPR-TV in Pasco, Wash. A Montclair, N.J., native and graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, Dan holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and English. He is a two-time Emmy Award winner and an Associated Press Award recipient.
You may remember that I featured Dan in an Inside WRAL blogpost in June 2009. In it, he talked about his family's passion for the news business.
His grandfather was an anchor at a Los Angeles TV station, his father is a video tape editor and his mom was a producer. His brother, Ben, is an online editor at CBS 3 in Philadelphia, and his stepfather is Byron Pitts, who works as a contributor for 60 Minutes and is the chief national correspondent for The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
WRAL News Director Rick Gall said he knew Dan "was destined for a larger stage after watching his election night reports from the Obama victory celebration in Chicago … his live shots were outstanding."
In an e-mail to the newsroom, Rick praised Dan for his "competitive zeal, desire to learn, committment to quality reporting and strong live skills."
