'Tis the season to light the WRAL tower
For the 54th year, WRAL-TV lit up a 300-foot tower outside the station's Raleigh headquarters to help celebrate the holiday season.
Posted — UpdatedThe tradition started in 1959 with Capitol Broadcasting Co. founder A.J. Fletcher reading "A Christmas Carol" before the tower was lit. The lighting grew to include musical performances and aerial video from Sky 5.
This year, WRAL-TV anchor David Crabtree continued the tradition by reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas" for a group of children.
The Methodist University Chorale provided festive holiday tunes.
Outside, Southern Snowman continued their tradition of creating a wintry wonderland for those who stopped by the studios to watch the lighting in person.
The tower is covered in over 2,800 lights, which stay there the whole year but are only lighted during the holidays. Before the lighting, maintenance workers test every single bulb to make sure everything is in working order.
The tower will stay lit until New Year's Day.
