Memorial Day weekend is here, which means it's just about time for the WRAL Freedom Balloon Fest!

It's Friday through Monday at Fleming Loop Park in Fuquay-Varina and includes all kinds of opportunities to see hot air balloons in action - from tethered balloon rides to glowing hot air balloons at night to even competition flights. The full schedule is on WRAL.com's Out & About calendar.

But the festival isn't just about what's up in the sky. There's plenty for people to do down on the ground as well.

Some of the highlights for families:

  • A Fun Zone will feature children's games and rides. It opens at 2 p.m, Friday; 10 a.m., Saturday; and 11 a.m., Sunday.
  • You can see K-9 Frisbee dogs in action at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., Friday, and 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
  • There also will be live music and arts and crafts vendors.
Be sure to check the parking arrangements before you go. There is no parking at the park, but there are free and paid lots in walking distance.
